Cognitive Reflex Therapy Overview

  • Cognitive Reflex Therapy explains how our brains react automatically to situations by following a simple chain: you (the actor) encounter something in your environment, memory, or relationships (the field), which creates a moment of attention or meaning (the stimulus). Your brain instantly compares this stimulus to your learned patterns—your emotional and cultural “shortcuts”—called cognitive arcs. If the situation feels familiar or safe, your system stays in resonance, allowing calm thinking and intentional choices. But if the situation feels threatening, overwhelming, or too different from what you expect, your system shifts into dissonance, activating fast, protective reflexes like fear, tension, anger, or shutdown. These emotional and physical reactions are not signs of weakness; they are automatic survival responses. CRT helps you recognize where you are in this chain, understand why your reactions happen so quickly, and learn how to shift from reflexive survival responses to more balanced, intentional and reflective responses.
